ACTS Dublin

Accessible Community Transport Southside (ACTS)

The key objective of ACTS is to provide a flexible, customer focused, accessible and affordable transport service to people with disabilities and to people with limited mobility in South and West Dublin.

This service was set up because of the identification of the very real mobility difficulties of people in the area, needing a door-to-door service in order to break through their sense of isolation, and of being unable to access public transport. (A Feasibility Study as part of their Business Plan showed that up to 21.5 % of the population of Dun Laoghaire have mobility difficulties)

ACTS started in mid February 2002 as a FAS Social Economy project, having been formed as a not for profit company limited by guarantee Registered number 345726.  ACTS has a Board of Directors representing the Community and Disability Sector, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Chamber of Commerce, Southside Partnership, KWCD, Tallaght and Clondalkin Partnerships.

ACTS are currently part-funded by the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs through the Pobal Community Services Programme (CSP) .
ACTS operates as a Travel Club for people with disabilities and people with limited mobility .They currently have 1350 members (809 of whom are wheelchair users) who have joined their Travel Club and they carry out over 1500 passenger trips per month

They have 6 Accessible Minibuses operating Monday – Friday during the day (up to 7pm) across localised areas of South and West Dublin such as Dun Laoghaire, Stillorgan, Dundrum, Ballinteer, Tallaght and Ballyfermot.

They also have two to three buses operating in the evenings and at weekends.

All of Minibuses are capable of taking at least 2 Wheelchair passengers and up to 5 Seated passengers, all specially adapted with Ricon Lifts, four point restraints for the wheelchairs and specially trained drivers under the Midas Minibus Driving Awareness  programme.

They bring people regularly to work, training centres, day care each day and then in off peak time 10am – 2:30pm or evening time they can respond and fulfil other kinds of bookings such as to medical appointments, attending meetings, shopping or going out socially.
It is a seven day service, starting from 7am to 2200pm each day with scope to run later at weekends.  They have a contribution fare rate in place to meet the costs of running the service, and they send invoices to the members who use the service at the end of each month, or to the Accounts Department of particular Organisations and Nursing Homes.

From 1st January  2007, they  began a localized Community Transport Service for groups in the Loughlinstown / Shanganagh RAPID area with funding assistance from Dormant Accounts Fund and using a 15 seater Accessible Volkswagen Crafter.
